Collage Artist Statement
When I began creating my romantic collage, the first thing I did was try to find images with striking contrast. This is why I chose the image of the sunset as a backdrop and the woman facing towards it. Her slightly silhouetted figure seemed very romantic to me and the sword in her hand showed that she was struggling with something. I ended up choosing to make the topic of my piece the struggle that all humans have against their dark desires, the evil thoughts and intentions that we all have that tempt us to do things we know are wrong. I found an image of a woman in shadow and changed her eyes to make her look shady. I then added a dark man with glowing eyes coming out of her head to symbolize the dark thoughts going on behind those shifty eyes. Romantic artwork often uses a diagonal composition, so I attempted to do the same, keeping the two subjects in the rule of thirds intersections. I used some framing with the cliffs on either side, and attempted to have a lot of contrast in colour throughout the piece. I think it could have been better, but I do like the idea behind the piece very much.
